Mill Dam & Fish Ladder
Mill Dam & Fish Ladder

One of our favourite things to do this time of year is to visit the Mill Dam & Fish Ladder. Located on the east side of 2nd Avenue West between 4th Street West and 7th Street West and tucked neatly along the PottaOKwatomi River, the Mill Dam is one of the many places in Owen Sound to enjoy nature at its best. A picturesque trail winds along with the river and under large willow trees – a perfect place for a picnic!

Fish Ladder

The Fish Ladder, the very first to be built in Ontario, is maintained by the Sydenham Sportsmen's Association and is used to help the 10’s of thousands of trout and salmon that migrate upstream to their spawning beds in the spring and fall. Rainbow Trout migrate in April and Chinook Salmon from September to October.

Watching the fish battle their way up the ladder is a unique experience as they jump high in the air and then fight their way swimming up the ladder to reach the calm river beyond. The best time to visit is mid-September to Thanksgiving, depending on the weather.
